Happy Thanksgiving!
In the spirit of the season, we asked neighbors to share how they have used Nextdoor to help their neighbors in times of need. We also asked some of our staff to share why they are thankful for Nextdoor and our communities across the country.
“We used Nextdoor to help a young family whose mother was on bed rest by coordinating home-cooked meals, babysitters, and running errands. In another instance, the neighborhood rallied around a neighbor who had fallen on hard times following a cancer diagnoses and was behind on rent by providing anonymous cash donations.” – Chuck C., Nextdoor Lower East Avenues
“Here’s one of my favorite Nextdoor stories: An 82-year old woman was living alone. She posted to her Nextdoor neighbors that all of her tomatoes had ripened at the same time and she couldn’t use them all. She put them in a basket on her front porch and told her neighbors to come by and take one but knock on her door and say “Howdy.” The next day, she posted on Nextdoor to apologize that the tomatoes were all gone – but she’d met 10 new neighbors and she couldn’t wait for her squash to come in.” – Ed Everett, Nextdoor City Strategist
“It’s great to be able to share a concern such as trash left by high water with caring neighbors that can offer moral and practical support.” – Farrell K., Nextdoor Cox Meadows
“When I was in college, my parents moved to Spokane, WA, where they knew no one. A neighbor had a tradition where everyone who didn’t have local family or anywhere to go could come to their house for Thanksgiving. Over the years, the gathering has grown, and my parents are using Nextdoor to help plan for it. Those neighbors now feel like family.” – Anne Dreshfield, Nextdoor Communications
“We used Nextdoor to coordinate a canned food and used clothing drive for the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services. It was very successful!” – Isaac G., Nextdoor Tahoe Park
“My fiance and I were not having luck finding an apartment in our area so we posted a request to our Nearby Neighborhoods only four days before we had to move out. A woman responded within an hour offering to recommend us to her landlord just because we were neighbors. We were able to move in that weekend – I’m thankful for Nextdoor because it saved us from being homeless!” – Jen Burke, Nextdoor Communications
From all of us at Nextdoor, we wish you and your families a very happy Thanksgiving!
UPDATE: Thank you to our members who sent us stories. The three featured above were selected to receive a donation to a local food bank or charity of their choice.
I’m grateful for the neighborhood that I live in. I’ve lived in the area for a long time. Even though I don’t know a lot of neighbors in the area, I do know several people in my building that I could reach out to in case of an emergency.
I do hope that more neighbors will join Nextdoor.com, but I can only let them know about it & hope that they will join.
Thanks Linda! We do too – let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you for sharing these stories!!
Our pleasure Julie!
I would like to thank all for the many welcoming emails I received. I wish you a very happy holiday season and a prosperous new year.
