Stay Safe During the Cold Snap with Nextdoor

Written by ndmulti

As temperatures plummet across the country, neighbors are retreating indoors to bundle up and stay safe in this chilly start to 2014. Neighbors are turning to each other to stay safe and connected while they’re huddled indoors.

Here are a few tips on how to use Nextdoor during this cold snap:

  1. Use Urgent Alerts in times of need. Whether it’s due to lost power from ice storms, stranded cars in snow drifts, or to spread safety information from your local police department, our Urgent Alerts can help disseminate important information quickly and effectively.
  2. Coordinate a playdate for kids who have snow days. Are your kids stuck at home and cooped up thanks to school cancellations? Connect with other parents in your neighborhood to plan a playdate that’s close by.
  3. Offer a hand. Do you have time this week to help a neighbor shovel snow, deliver a meal, or lend an extra space heater? Let your neighbors know on Nextdoor and extend what may be a very needed hand.
  4. Plan a neighborhood dinner. Send out an invitation to a neighborhood dinner to keep everyone in from the cold and well-fed. Invite your neighbors to bring a stash of some of their cold-weather foods, or order in and make it a take-out feast.
  5. Share safety tips with neighbors. Keep connected and well-informed by spreading cold-weather tips to your neighbors, like warning each other to bring pets indoors at night, keep water running to prevent frozen pipes, and how to best insulate against the cold.

From all of us at Nextdoor, stay safe and warm this week! If you have any examples of ways you have used Nextdoor during this severe weather and want to share your story, contact us at stories@nextdoor.com.
