Puzzled, J.D. McCoy, a neighbor in Oklahoma City’s Helm Farm neighborhood, turned to Nextdoor to see if she could solve the mystery of the note in her mailbox.
Neighbors slowly began to put the pieces together: they had all received similar slips of paper, but with different grocery items.
McCoy’s neighbors began to shop for all of the items on their lists, plus a few extras, gathering enough food and household supplies to fill McCoy’s car. She drove her packed car to the address on the note and discovered an elderly woman and her son, suffering from terminal cancer, who only had $10 to their name.
“It means a lot to me. It means that somebody cares,” the elderly neighbor says. “And God brings them to help when nobody has anything.”
McCoy and her neighbors don’t plan on stopping there: they’re already gathering another round of groceries for the family, and are coordinating rides to help their elderly neighbor and her son get to doctor appointments.
