Since November 1st, nearly 20 home break-ins have occurred across several East Raleigh neighborhoods, shattering neighbors’ sense of safety and security.
But the thieves targeted the wrong neighborhoods: refusing to sit back and let the break-ins continue, neighbors are uniting on Nextdoor and fighting back.
A sign in the neighborhood warns neighbors of recent break-ins in the area.
“We want to be known as a proactive community,” one neighbor said. “Not reactive.”
One neighbor created and shared a map to track where break-ins have occurred. Another offered to help reinforce doors by installing longer screws that would make it nearly impossible to kick in. A group of neighbors went door to door with fliers that offered tips on how to prevent a home from being burglarized.
“It’s great,” said Amy Weston, who lives in one of the communities hit the hardest. “So many people in the neighborhood who wouldn’t have known – now know about the other break-ins.”
The neighbors are working with the Raleigh Police Department, as well as installing motion sensors and surveillance videos in homes around the communities.
