San Antonio Neighbors Catch Burglars in the Act

Written by Anne Dreshfield

Thanks to a cell phone video that was shared on Nextdoor, neighbors in one San Antonio neighborhood are sleeping a little easier at night.

Tuesday afternoon, a neighbor in the Northeast Crossing neighborhood saw a strange sight: a few heads bobbing up and down behind a fence as three unfamiliar young men headed toward a neighbor’s house, slipping behind the garage. Perturbed, the neighbor grabbed their cell phone and started filming.

The video captures the young men approaching a sliding glass door, lifting it off its tracks, and entering the home. The neighbor reported the break-in to police and then uploaded the video to Nextdoor Northeast Crossing.

“Crime is up,” said Robert Keller, a neighbor who saw the video on Nextdoor and says his neighborhood’s website helps keep him abreast of what’s happening in his neighborhood. Following the events of Tuesday afternoon, neighbors used Nextdoor to thank those in their community who were keeping an eye out.

“We really wanted to thank them for being brave and doing what was needed. They kept an eye on the situation. We encourage each other to help each other,” said Keller.

“We really wanted to thank them for being brave and doing what was needed.”
The video shows the suspects running from the house, jumping the back fence, and taking off through a field.

Neighbors say that thanks to the video, the San Antonio Police Department – who uses Nextdoor to disseminate crime and safety information to residents across the city – was able to identify and arrest the suspects.

“After today’s event I gave the app a 5-star rating instead of my usual 2,” Keller said with a laugh. “I recommend the app to anybody.”
