Tuesday afternoon, a neighbor in the Northeast Crossing neighborhood saw a strange sight: a few heads bobbing up and down behind a fence as three unfamiliar young men headed toward a neighbor’s house, slipping behind the garage. Perturbed, the neighbor grabbed their cell phone and started filming.
The video captures the young men approaching a sliding glass door, lifting it off its tracks, and entering the home. The neighbor reported the break-in to police and then uploaded the video to Nextdoor Northeast Crossing.
Robert Keller, a neighbor who saw the video on Nextdoor, says his neighborhood’s Nextdoor website helps keep him abreast of what’s happening in his neighborhood. Following the events of Tuesday afternoon, neighbors used Nextdoor to thank those in their community who were keeping an eye out.
“We really wanted to thank them for being brave and doing what was needed. They kept an eye on the situation. We encourage each other to help each other,” said Keller.
Neighbors say that thanks to the video, the San Antonio Police Department – who uses Nextdoor to disseminate crime and safety information to residents across the city – was able to identify and arrest the suspects.
“After today’s event I gave the app a 5-star rating,” Keller said with a laugh. “I recommend the app to anybody.”
