Cincinnati’s Mt. Washington Neighborhood is Thriving Thanks to Good Neighbor

Written by Jen Burke

Each month, Nextdoor is honoring the good neighbors who are making a difference in their neighborhoods every day with our Good Neighbor Award.

Each winner is nominated by their neighbors and will receive a gift card from Nextdoor in recognition of the positive impact they have made in their community.

For Jody Pol, being a good neighbor means doing more than one good deed at a time. It means ensuring her beloved Mt. Washington neighborhood is clean, beautiful, and connected by highlighting all of the great things it has to offer the larger community.

To do that, Jody heads up a variety of different initiatives in her community and was recognized for her efforts with the Good Neighbor Award. Here are just a few things Jody does that continues to make the Mt. Washington community a place for all to visit and enjoy:

Mt. Washington Cemetery: Jody works with a group of neighbors who clean up, protect and maintain the Mt. Washington Cemetery. Over the past two years, Jody has spent more than 20 hours each week working in the cemetery to make a place where people can enjoy the beautiful gardens and nature while also using it as a space to walk dogs and get some daily exercise. Because of her hard work and the work of her neighbors, the Mt. Washington Cemetery has become an enjoyable gathering spot for the community.

Market in the Park: Jody helps organize the community Farmer’s Market where neighbors come together to exchange produce, listen to live music, do arts and crafts, play games and learn about nature in the area.

Mt. Washington Water Tower: Jody has taken it upon herself to look after after the shining light of this little community – the Mt. Washington Water Tower, which was built in 1940. She hosts spaghetti dinners and events to raise money for lighting and maintenance for the iconic water tower. The tower is a staple of the community that every neighbor knows and loves and feels pride when they see it lit  up in lights every evening.
