Season of Giving: Milwaukee Neighbors Craft Letters, Care Packages for Soldiers Overseas

Written by ndmulti

In honor of the holidays, we’re sharing stories every week of how neighbors have used Nextdoor to help give back and help in their communities, starting on Giving Tuesday.

We hope you’re inspired to help give back this holiday season, in ways big or small. To join your Nextdoor neighborhood and rally your community to join in on the effort, visit www.nextdoor.com and enter your email and home address.

For one neighborhood in Milwaukee, celebrating the holidays this year required them to think outside of the box – or mailbox, as it were.

A group of intrepid neighbors started a group called United By Love, which works around the clock during the holidays to create holiday cards and packages for veterans and military members overseas.

United By Love was formed through Nextdoor, with neighbors spreading word of the initiative and inviting volunteers and donations across Milwaukee. Together, neighbors will gather cards and donations, which will be directed to Holidays for Heroes, a Red Cross program that helps deliver items overseas.

“It’s really hard to be separated, but the holidays make it even harder,” says Amanda Schlmmoller, a neighbor and member of United By Love. “When you see so much going on at this time of year with families and friends getting together, it can just be really heartbreaking. Hopefully, this will help.”

If you’re interested in forming your own United By Love group or volunteering to help military veterans or soldiers overseas, contact your local Red Cross office to get started.
