This past Saturday, neighbors from Nextdoor East Buntyn in Memphis, TN gathered for a fun ice cream social celebration as part of our Summer of Good Neighbors Tour! The 4th stop in our tour, this event was made extra special thanks to Mayor Strickland and the local Police and Fire Departments who helped us honor the neighbors of East Buntyn.
Not only was Nextdoor East Buntyn the first neighborhood in Memphis to join Nextdoor, but it is also one of the largest, with more than 600 households. Nestled right next to the University of Memphis, the neighborhood is a draw for many young families and is known to be both kid and dog friendly.
This neighborhood is also well known for its Annual Art Walk in the spring, which is organized each year by East Buntyn Good Neighbor Winner, Shannon Langellier, who was honored by the Mayor at the event. Shannon also helps coordinate other neighborhood events such as the annual 4th of July parade and yearly yard sales.
The neighborhood looked picture perfect on Saturday, as the weather dropped to a nice 80 degrees and neighbors came together to enjoy ice cream and celebrate their community. Mayor Strickland presented the East Buntyn neighbors with a proclamation, declaring them one of the “best” neighborhoods in all of Memphis.

Director Mike Rollings from the Memphis Police Department also commended the neighborhood for its work in creating a safer community. The Memphis Police Department, as well as the City, partnered with Nextdoor to help communities like East Buntyn stay safe and connected. And, according to Rollings, there’s no better way to keep crime out of the neighborhood than knowing your neighbors and the officers who patrol the area.
We are so grateful to have neighborhoods like East Buntyn helping us live out our mission to create stronger and safer neighborhoods worldwide.
Stay tuned for our next tour stop in Lake Oswego, OR!
Special thanks to Jane Carroll, Richard Ivy, Shannon Langellier, Jon McGuirt, and Pattie Pollan for helping us coordinate this fun event.
