Welcoming the Massachusetts State Police and Emergency Management Agency to the Neighborhood

Written by Annie Barco

Today we are thrilled to announce that the Massachusetts State Police and the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) have partnered with Nextdoor to improve statewide and neighbor-to-neighbor communications. This partnership makes Massachusetts the first state in the country to have both its state police and emergency management agency on Nextdoor.

MEMA and the Massachusetts State Police began using Nextdoor in late 2017, and have had a great initial response from the community. In fact, the departments’ introductory posts on Nextdoor collectively received over 4,000 ‘Thanks’ from MA neighbors, which shows that neighbors are eager to have a new way to connect with MEMA and the State Police.

On Nextdoor, the State Police and MEMA are able to work directly with Nextdoor neighborhoods to increase safety and strengthen virtual neighborhood watch. Thus far, the departments have used Nextdoor to spread the word about upcoming events and to share weather advisories.

“We need to reach people where they live their lives, and our social media platforms, including Nextdoor, allow us to provide important public safety information directly to our communities,” said Colonel Kerry A. Gilpin, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police.

Nextdoor has proven to be an essential and well-adopted tool for Massachusetts residents. More than 2,400 Massachusetts neighborhoods are connected on Nextdoor and use it every day to discuss crime and safety concerns, help find lost pets, share recommendations, and publicize community events.

MEMA and the Massachusetts State Police join over 2,800 public agencies across the country who are using Nextdoor for Public Agencies to build stronger relationships with their residents. Congratulations to MEMA and the State Police for taking this additional step to better connect with residents, and welcome to the neighborhood!
