Happy Earth Day: How your neighborhood can celebrate together

Written by Shannon Toliver

While we should strive for a greener future every day, Earth Day is a wonderful time to inspire your community to become more environmentally friendly. All around the world, neighbors are participating in demonstrations and events to protect our Earth while promoting a stronger and smarter society. Here are some ways people come together through Nextdoor to celebrate Earth Day:

Neighborhood cleanups: Local parks and communal areas could always use extra hands – especially following a holiday weekend. Post on Nextdoor to gather a walking group to collect litter while contributing to the spirit of community! Raquel Hill from Atlanta formed a group that meets every second Saturday of the month to cleanup near their neighborhood in Carroll Heights.

Community gardens: Have a green thumb? By joining a gardening and landscape group on Nextdoor, you can connect with like-minded neighbors to start a collective garden. Nadine Ford of Charlotte, North Carolina, rallied her Nextdoor neighbors to revamp a neglected lot into an educational community garden. Entirely volunteer run, Nadine donates the produce to seniors and neighbors with disabilities to encourage nutritious and sustainable diets in her community.

Recycled items through For Sale & Free: Before disposing of unwanted items around the house, post in Nextdoor’s For Sale & Free section to see if any of your neighbors are interested in them. Even plastic trinkets and toys can be donated towards art projects and schools rather than thrown away. Consult the creativity of your neighbors to find new ways to recycle or reuse goods in order to build a healthier future!

What does your neighborhood have planned for Earth Day this year?
