New Ways for Neighbors to Help Local Businesses on Nextdoor

Written by Tatyana Mamut

Over the past few weeks, local businesses have faced unprecedented challenges. As our Nextdoor newsfeeds filled with posts from neighbors asking how they can support them, we worked quickly to develop new ways to answer those questions and connect all of us to our favorite neighborhood businesses. Today, we’re announcing new local business sections in the main Nextdoor feed and encouraging local businesses to add their takeout and delivery options, gift cards, and GoFundMe campaigns to their Nextdoor Business Pages.

To ensure that you have the most current and accurate information about local businesses, like updates to hours, services, or operations, you’ll now see business posts in the main Nextdoor newsfeed. Business Posting is currently available to businesses that were voted a 2019 Neighborhood Favorite by the community, and we are working on expanding to all businesses in the near future.

We’ve also updated Nextdoor Business Pages so neighbors can support their favorite businesses with:

  • Gift Cards: You can now click on the gift card URL to support businesses while they are temporarily closed or restricted by social distancing mandates.
  • Takeout and Delivery Options: Missing your favorite restaurants, retail stores, cafes, or bars? Businesses can now mark if they’re offering takeout and delivery options during this time.
  • GoFundMe Campaigns: Help raise money for your favorite bartender, barista, or business. Businesses that have a GoFundMe campaign currently running can include their link in the “Story” section of their Nextdoor Business Page, making it easy to support them.

If you know a business that’s not on Nextdoor, encourage them to claim a free Business Page to connect to the neighborhood. Share this article to help them get started. Nextdoor is here for you, and all the people and businesses who make your neighborhood a great place to live. With neighbors helping neighbors, we know we can make it through this time — and make our communities stronger than ever.

  • We’ve started a #SpendItLocal challenge encouraging those who are able to committing to spending their stimulus money in ways that help the local economy. Gift card purchases for services later on, donating to local food banks, resource centers, and schools, etc. The local news picked up the story and will be talking about it today at 3:30. Would be great to have Nextdoor help to spread the word, especially since it’s essentially where the idea was born.

  • This is good and shows caring neighbors, but remember not everyone has a smart phone to get this information, the elderly are not up on these things mainly ones who can’t see well or have arthritis, smartphones are a frustration rather than a convivence, some of us have computers that are old too. Please find a way to connect by calling or checking on the most vulnerable;

  • As a volunteer lead on Next Door, I find it confusing that Community Guidelines say business postings (ads, basically) aren’t allowed in General, Topics, or For Sale & Free, then Next Door tells businesses they get 2 free posts per month. At least with the little i for info at the top makes it easy to tell which is which, but even the paid ads offend some viewers. I know they’re necessary to supporting Next Door but this is the first I’ve hears about 2 free per month (if business is a member).

    • Hi Sherrie, thanks for reaching out and sorry for the confusion! Business posting is a new feature where local business owners, casual service providers, and home service providers can all participate on Nextdoor. In order to post about your business, members must first create or claim a business page that displays basic information about their business or services. From a claimed business profile, business owners can now post twice per month about their business.
