Stay Connected With Your Favorite Local Businesses on Nextdoor

Written by Shannon Toliver

Neighbors can now engage with local businesses in the Nextdoor newsfeed.

At Nextdoor, we know that local businesses are core to the neighborhood. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, neighbors have been turning to Nextdoor to find ways to help small businesses that are facing extreme challenges. In fact, conversations on Nextdoor about supporting local businesses increased 17 times! In response, we made sure you could access gift cards, take out options, and fundraisers directly from Nextdoor Business Pages.

Now, for the first time ever, you can receive important updates from neighborhood businesses right in your Nextdoor newsfeed! Business Posting is a free tool available to all types of businesses so you can hear directly from your favorite restaurants, shops, mechanics, and more. Here are just a few of the ways you can stay connected with your beloved local businesses on Nextdoor:

Back-to-Business Updates

To adapt to the changing landscape of COVID-19, businesses are sharing the most up-to-date information on hours, services, and operations. Since 1936, Cliff’s Variety Store has been serving the San Francisco, CA, community with an extensive inventory of home items, crafts, gifts, and even toys. The owner has kept customers in his neighborhood up to date on his business by posting on Nextdoor to share their new store hours and safe shopping guidelines. Within three days, their first post received over 300 comments from neighbors expressing their gratitude!

New Products and Offers

Did you know that 30% of local businesses have changed their original products and services to meet neighbors’ evolving needs? Days after Texas announced shelter-in-place mandates, 1431 Cafe in Cedar Park, TX, noticed hour-long lines at nearby grocery stores. Still receiving their grocery shipments from their wholesale provider, 1431 Cafe quickly transitioned their business and began offering grocery orders and delivery to neighbors. They posted on Nextdoor and immediately began receiving numerous grocery orders. “I’ve sold hundreds of pounds of flour, I’ve sold several pounds of yeast by now, and I’d say 95% of that is because of our Nextdoor presence,” shared Earl Follis, the owner.

Celebrate Special Moments

During this time apart, businesses are posting virtually to thank neighbors for their continued support, to celebrate milestones such as anniversaries, and to spread kindness throughout the neighborhood. In Atlanta, GA, local baker Dawn Belisle of Delights By Dawn typically relied on spring and summer festivals to bring in business, but unfortunately these events were all canceled or postponed this year. As a one-woman-show, Dawn got creative and posted on Nextdoor to inspire neighbors to celebrate the 4th of July with a bang by pre-ordering her beloved alcohol-infused cupcakes and mini bundts.

Tips and Tricks

Learn from experts that know best! Service providers and industry professionals are posting on Nextdoor to share free tips for neighbors at home. Whether you want summer reading recommendations from a local bookstore, DIY projects from an art studio, or car maintenance tips from a mechanic, you can now get their input on Nextdoor.

Community Service

Even though times are tough, many businesses are showing that there is always room for generosity. Tim and Erica Gallagher, the owners of Above and Beyond Plumbing in Amarillo, TX, have worked hard over the years to build a loyal clientele on Nextdoor. Knowing that many customers’ finances had been affected by the pandemic, they made a business post encouraging neighbors to reach out for help regardless of their financial situation. That post led them to a family in dire need who had lived without gas for two months. When Tim and Erica arrived at the house, they discovered five gas leaks in the home. Above and Beyond Plumbing was able to fix up the home good as new and free of charge. Tim shared, “I just love our community. I love giving back. And I love helping people. Nextdoor has helped me do that.”

  • What about a business like mine, a mental health clinic? Many therapists are suffering despite all of the talk about the need for mental healthcare. We provide a valuable service very different from a restaurant for example but need support. Many therapists have websites with helpful blogs like mine where you can find support even if you don’t become a patient. It would help to give Google reviews about blog content for example if nothing else.❤️ My homepage has a link to go to Google and leave a review.

    • Hi Debbie, Thanks for your comment! Mental Health Clinic’s are absolutely encouraged to sign up for a free Nextdoor Business Page and use business posts to connect with their neighbors.

  • I am thankful for Nextdoor website!!! I am one of the “leads” and really don’t do much in that role. In the beginning I sent out invitations to neighbors. Now I can’t find where the “invitation section” is located anymore. I had a friend interested in another neighborhood and could not find it after looking for a long time. Years ago it was easy to find.

  • Hi, It is hard to find information about having a business page on ND. I am a college essay coach and I am not allowed to post in general, but I’m not sure how to go about having a business page and what the costs are? I think there needs to be a more efficient way for people such as myself, especially now also dog walkers, baby sitters, handyman, etc. Obviously people like us cannot afford the same as larger businesses. Would love to find a better way, or a way to navigate this.

    • Hi Janet, thanks for reaching out. You can claim your free business page by visiting Nextdoor.com/localbusiness and start posting today for free!

  • I am a Realtor and I pay for Sponsorship. Are you saying I can now post for FREE? I am a Neighborhood Favorite. Please advise as I am also a Lead and report ‘advertising’ every day. This can be very confusing. Some businesses are allowed to post, but others aren’t?
    HELP!

    • Hi Rhonda, thanks for reaching out. A member of our team will follow up with you via email to clarify your Neighborhood Sponsorship.

  • I hope this is the right site to leave this message. I have cracks in my driveway and I am looking for someone to fix and seal my driveway. Can anyone recommend anyone. Thank you.
