Introducing Sell for Good, Empowering Neighbors to Support Local Nonprofits

Written by Rhett Angold

With Sell for Good, neighbors can now buy and sell goods while supporting a community cause.

Despite business closures, shelter-in-place orders, and increased COVID-19 cases, we’ve seen kindness come to life during this pandemic. More than ever before, neighbors are turning to Nextdoor to offer support, lean on others when they need help, and give back to their local communities.

As people keep their distance, they continue to unite around their neighbors, local businesses, and charitable causes. In fact, conversations on Nextdoor related to donating increased 7x since the start of the global pandemic. In order to turn those conversations into actions, today we are introducing Sell for Good– a new feature giving you the ability to support local nonprofits, including animal shelters, PTAs, food pantries, and more, by simply buying and selling items on Nextdoor’s For Sale & Free.

Sell for Good combines two powerful forces to make a difference: a nonprofit’s mission and the kindness of neighbors.

Nonprofit organizations are facing an increasingly challenging environment. A recent survey from the Nonprofit Finance Fund found that 50% of nonprofits have experienced reduced donations, and 60% of nonprofits report facing long-term financial instability. Meanwhile, as donation sites closed down, neighbors turned to For Sale & Free to declutter and give away items they no longer needed, resulting in nearly double the amount of listings. One neighbor in Berkeley, CA, was even able to raise thousands of dollars for the local humane society by simply selling homemade face masks on For Sale & Free.

Now, with Sell for Good, neighbors have a secure and easy way to support their favorite nonprofits and create lasting impact at the local level. When listing items on For Sale & Free, you will now see the option to donate proceeds to a local nonprofit through our partnership with PayPal Giving Fund. Neighbors can then purchase items marked with the Sell for Good emblem to know their money is supporting a local cause with no extra effort.

Neighbors are already loving this new feature–in Los Angeles, CA, Stephanie Morgan had been searching for a way to support organizations addressing racial inequity. Meanwhile, she logged on to Nextdoor to get rid of a table she no longer needed and discovered Sell for Good. When she clicked on LA Voice and read their mission to create equity and abundance for all, it was an easy choice. Immediately after listing her table for good, she received a message from a neighbor saying they were thrilled she was donating her beautiful table to support a local cause. Once the table sold, Stephanie was able to interest the buyer in more items around her house and continue to donate all of the proceeds through Sell for Good sharing, “This has been a way to turn feelings of helplessness around racial inequality into tangible action.”

In addition to offering a way to give back through a feature you already know and love, Nextdoor is partnering with local nonprofits across the country to help them instantly reach verified neighbors and drive support for their cause. Dress For Success, a global nonprofit dedicated to the economic advancement of women around the world that has overhauled its programming structure to a virtual operating model, will now be able to fundraise via Sell for Good to ensure continued operations and connect with their network on a hyper-local level.

“During this time of crisis, where women have been affected at disproportionate rates, Dress For Success’ mission, programs and services are more critical than ever to our clients who face significant challenges with employment, financial stability and mental health,” said Joi Gordon, CEO of Dress For Success. “Nextdoor’s Sell for Good initiative offers a way for neighbors to help us continue to meet the needs of our clients through virtual programs and services, even if they aren’t in a financial position to offer monetary donations.”
