Community building Neighbor stories

It’s Random Acts of Kindness Day. Who’s making a difference in your neighborhood?

Written by Team Nextdoor

On this Random Acts of Kindness Day, we want to celebrate all those who continue to support their neighbors in simple and surprising ways. How will you reach out with a random act of kindness today?

We’re inspired by neighbors like Charisse Fontes in Concord, Calif., who has fed more than 450 local families with money out of her own pocket during the pandemic. Each month Charisse posts on Nextdoor asking neighbors to sign up if they’d appreciate a free meal, no questions asked. Her dream is to create a nonprofit so she can expand to other areas.

Piotr Skoczylas in Wales, UK, has met hundreds of neighbors and sold more than 3,000 cups of coffee via his cargo bike since losing his job as a barista. In Houston, Texas, Guy Lance posted on Nextdoor asking for Christmas tree donations. Neighbors responded—and he used the trees to make 160 free canes for veterans:

These stories exemplify the power of the neighborhood, especially in tough times. In that spirit, today we’re launching a campaign to celebrate neighborhoods across the U.S. In partnership with Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere (R.A.K.E.) and Goalsetter, it kicks off in Atlanta’s Cascade Heights neighborhood, where today we’ll be giving away pizzas, donating money to 160 high school seniors and feeding frontline workers.

We hope you’ll take a moment today to contribute to your neighborhood and appreciate those nearby. Follow @Nextdoor on Instagram to see more examples of how neighbors are helping each other. And share your random acts of kindness here.

  • My neighbor Kim DuCharme didn’t hesitate when I had a delivery for one of my Lasagna Love recipient this week. It was a bit complex this time. However, Kim pulled it off without a hitch. 💛

  • Hello, I am trying to help a young couple get married. They had planned on a outside wedding. ☃️🌨
But due to the weather, it is not going to happen there. We are looking for a place to hold it. We have everything for the wedding. Is there a church or meeting hall that we could use? All so if any one can make her a flower bouquet, not real flowers. It would be awesome. Is there any body who could help us. The wedding is on Friday. Thank you for reading this and any ideas that could help .

    • Hi Betty, best of luck finding a venue! This is Nextdoor’s nationwide blog, so be sure to post this message in your local Nextdoor neighborhood by logging in at nextdoor.com or visiting the mobile app. Stay warm!

  • I hope the wedding went well. If possible, we here on Nextdoor would enjoy hearing about where they were able to hold the wedding and how it went. It would also be great if you could share some photos from the wedding. Best Wishes to this young couple!

  • I started an Absolutely Free Group and we donate our household items and clothing to help others out. It’s been a huge success and people love it!
I also started a Garden Sharing Group where we will trade vegetables and fruits that each other grows. What is left over, I will donate to the soup kitchen to help feed the needy.

  • Such an uplifting and positive part of social media, ….great to see and glad to know that random acts of kindess are in effect…
