Each month, Nextdoor is honoring the good neighbors who are making a difference in their neighborhoods every day with our Good Neighbor Award. Each winner is nominated by their neighbors and will receive a gift card from Nextdoor in recognition of the positive impact they have made in their community.

We hear inspiring stories everyday about neighbors helping each other in times of need – and often hear about neighbors going above and beyond for others in their darkest hour.

“Erin is a true community-minded neighbor.”

For Gene Thorpe, a photographer based outside of Boston, he experienced this first hand. When a fire ravaged his home and displaced him and his family in the middle of the night, it was his neighbor who came to his aid.

“Erin is a true community-minded neighbor,” Gene shared with us. Upon finding out about the blaze, Erin sprang into action.

“She offered us food, a hot shower, and a warm place to stay,” Gene said. And she didn’t stop there: Gene’s elderly mother is suffering from Alzheimer’s, so the fire was especially jarring and terrifying for her. Erin stepped up to help out with her, comforting her and trying to bring a sense of normalcy back to her life. She helped take care of Gene’s mother while he dealt with the aftermath of the fire.

“She continues to check in on us daily, even now,” says Gene. His appreciation for Erin was apparent in his nomination of her for our Good Neighbor Award, and we agree: her resolve, dedication, and empathy for her fellow neighbors is inspiring.

From all of us at Nextdoor, congratulations Erin on winning the Good Neighbor Award!
