Good Neighbor Spotlight: Marjory and Gilles, Lyon, France

Written by Lucile Boccon

On a cold winter day last November, Nextdoor member Brigitte met a young woman on the streets of her neighborhood in Lyon. The young woman had a little girl sleeping in her arms. Brigitte asked the young woman if she needed help, and learned that the woman and her daughter had no place to sleep at night.

Alarmed by the situation, Brigitte immediately posted a message on Nextdoor asking for help from her neighbors to find the woman and her daughter a place to stay. Soon after, Brigitte received a message from neighbors Marjory and Gilles, who were happy to help, and made a room available in their home for the woman and her daughter throughout the winter.

Six months later, thanks to Marjory and Gilles’ hospitality and care, the woman has finally found a home of her own. Marjory and Gilles ended up moving to Vietnam with their three children, but before they left, Brigitte nominated the couple for the 2019 Good Neighbor Awards in France to thank them for the solidarity they have shown to their community.

“This is a truly altruistic family, fighting daily to help others. They are special people with beautiful souls!” Brigitte said of Marjory and Gilles.

This past month, Nextdoor presented Marjory and Gilles with the Good Neighbor Award. “Marjory and Gilles’ commitment to their community, and spirit of solidarity in Lyon is an invaluable asset to the neighborhood. At Nextdoor, we are nothing without our members who each day use our platform to change lives in their neighborhood,” said Nextdoor France’s Communications Manager Emile Josselin.

At Nextdoor we are convinced that if every one of us is committed to acting locally like Brigitte, Marjory and Gilles, we’ll make societal change.
