5 ways to give back to your neighborhood this holiday season

Written by Team Nextdoor

The holiday season is a wonderful time of year to show your neighbors how much you care by helping those in need.

Did you know that 1 in 8 kids are at risk for hunger, and every community in the country is home to families who face hunger?

To come together to end hunger, Nextdoor is working with Feeding America this holiday season, and offering additional ways to spread kindness and goodwill this month.

Nextdoor helps neighbors spread joy this holiday season with its first ever Neighborhood Give Back

Nextdoor is empowering neighbors to give back to their neighborhoods this holiday season with the “Neighborhood Give Back.”

The Neighborhood Give Back unites neighbors around the common goal of helping others, both online and in real-life.

Whether it’s donating to your community, gathering together, or supporting local businesses, neighbors are encouraged to participate in the Neighborhood Give Back throughout the month of December.

5 ways to give back to your neighborhood this holiday season

There are many ways you can spread holiday cheer and give back in your neighborhood. Through Nextdoor, here are some of the ways you can help your local community.

1. Organize or find volunteer events in your neighborhood.

By organizing a volunteer opportunity using Nextdoor Events, you can bring your neighborhood together to support neighbors in need.

Simply create an event on Nextdoor to spread the word and find nearby volunteer events on Nextdoor’s Events Map.

Not sure what kind of event you would like to host? Here are a few examples:

  • Host a food drive in support of your local food bank.
  • Host a virtual food drive using Feeding America’s Team Feed.
  • Write and send holiday cards to deployed troops or local nursing homes.
  • Organize a fundraiser or silent auction to raise money for charity.

2. Sell unwanted items and donate the proceeds.

Are you looking to part with unused items in your home?

You can declutter, sell items, and easily donate the proceeds to a good cause this holiday season.

Located within the For Sale & Free experience on Nextdoor, Sell for Good enables neighbors to sell and buy goods that directly benefit local non-profits.

This year, Nextdoor is working with Feeding America to help end hunger. Throughout the holiday season, neighbors who sell items through Sell for Good can donate all or a portion of the proceeds to Feeding America or other non-profit organizations.

3. Donate to charities to support their important work.

Contributing financially to non-profit organizations provides reliable funding that allows organizations to help others during the holiday season and throughout the year.

You can support Feeding America and more non-profits through one-time or recurring donations or make a contribution on a loved one’s behalf as a holiday gift.

Any amount you can give has an impact, and setting aside an amount you can donate each month or year is a wonderful way to give back to the causes close to your heart.

4. Help your neighbors in need.

Assisting with running errands or shoveling snow is another way you can be there for your neighbors.

By using Nextdoor’s Help Map, you can let neighbors know how you’re available to help, and you can connect directly with neighbors in your immediate area.

Here are simple ways you can offer to help your neighbors:

  • Picking up prescriptions or groceries
  • Being available if there’s an emergency
  • Driving a neighbor to an appointment
  • Pet sitting during the holidays
  • Preparing a home-cooked meal

5. Support local businesses.

When local businesses thrive, neighborhoods thrive.

Neighbors can shop small and give the gift of recommendations to show their support for their favorite neighborhood business this holiday season. A neighbor’s praise is one of the best ways to help a business get new customers.

Neighbors can also Fave a business on Nextdoor to show their love and ensure posts from that business show up prominently in their feed.

Shopping local and showing your support for small businesses can have a big impact in your community.

Whether you’re hosting a volunteer event or selling items to support an important cause—like Feeding America—you can take part in the Neighborhood Give Back this holiday season by downloading the free Nextdoor app or by visiting nextdoor.com to get started.
