It's Time to Say Thank You: Nominate a Good Neighbor

Every neighborhood has one. The neighbor who brings in your trash cans and waters your plants while you're away. The one who checks in after a storm. The one who's just always there. Most of the time, that goes unsaid.

We're giving neighbors nationwide a simple way to say it out loud. From Tuesday, August 25 through Monday, September 14, by posting on Nextdoor using the hashtag #GoodNeighborDay.

Five neighbors across the country will be publicly recognized on National Good Neighbor Day, Monday, September 28 here on our blog.

How to nominate a good neighbor

Nominating someone takes about two minutes. Here's what to include:

• Click this link to create a new https://nextdoor.com/gnd on Nextdoor and complete the sentences
• Posts must contain hashtag #goodneighborday to count (it's already included when you click the link above)
• Say what they did, specifically, and how often they do it. Not "kindest person I know," but the actual thing: the neighbor who brings your trash cans in, waters your garden while you're away, checks in after a storm
• Optional: tag the neighbor you're nominating (or just write their name if they're not on Nextdoor) and add a photo if you have one
• The last day to post and nominate someone is Monday, September 14

If the neighbor you're nominating isn't on Nextdoor yet, share your post with them so they can see your shoutout.

Eligibility:

• They’re a real person, not a business or a group
• You can’t nominate yourself or anyone in your own household
• It has to be something they did as a neighbor, not as part of a job or an official role
• They don’t need a Nextdoor account for you to nominate them
• More than one person can nominate the same neighbor, but each neighbor can only win once

Winners are selected by a committee of Nextdoor employees, one per region (Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, West). Nominations close 11:59 PM local time, Monday, September 14, 2026.

What happens next

Nominations close Monday, September 14. From there, a panel reviews the strongest nominations in each region, scoring them on how specific, sustained, and impactful the story is.

Why this matters

"Neighbors who know each other are more likely to look out for one another." That line came from a police officer at the first community meeting I ever organized, back in 2004, and it's stuck with me through every year since. Good Neighbor Day isn't a marketing moment. It's a chance to make that sentence true, one nomination at a time.

Nextdoor has always believed that neighbors helping neighbors isn't a feature. It's the foundation. This September, we're giving that belief a name, a hashtag, and recognize five winners.
